Things I Didn’t Know About Cleaning Toilets

by Nancy on October 18, 2012

Yes, I know, toilet cleaning is not the most exciting of subjects but at my house it’s a task that generally falls to me. One of the things that drives me nuts is cleaning around the base of the toilet bowl. No matter what type of wipe I use – paper towel, a cleaning wipe, a sponge or a rag – there’s ALWAYS little fuzzy clumpy bits of dust/hair that don’t wipe up.

Frustrated, I decided to go to my favorite internet source for all things to do with the home, Heather Solos’s blog, Home Ec 101. There I learned the reason everything sticks to the toilet base is because toilet bowls sweat making them dirt, hair, fuzzball magnets. Heather says the best way to keep dirt away from the base is to sweep the bathroom floor everyday.

As a lazy housekeeper, I really don’t want to sweep my bathroom floor everyday but thought I’d give it a try. I have a tiny bathroom so I bought a little hand broom and dustpan. It definitely helps but then there’s all sorts of stuff sticking to the hand broom. Then I thought I’d try a little hand vac but that is hard to get around the curved base of the bowl. Next I used a microfiber dust rag which worked fairly well but I had a rag full of dirt which I had to carry downstairs and outside to shake it out. (Definitely NOT something I will do everyday.)

(WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Content may not be appropriate for small children.) In a continuing effort to gross you out, here is one day’s worth of hair and guk captured by my Swiffer wipe.

Finally I struck on my own just the right solution, Swiffer dust wipes. A quick wipe around the floor each morning has significantly cut down on the gunk sticking to the toilet bowl. It makes me happy, and very home-ecy!

And speaking of toilets, (don’t read on if you are easily grossed out) did you know you should close the toilet bowl lid every time you flush? I learned from Heather that every time you flush small airborne particles are released. Ick! Hop on over to Home Ec 101 to read all about it.

Enough of this gruesome subject. Let me leave you with something pleasant. Sitting down to put the pictures into this post I looked out my living room window. Ahhh, autumn, my favorite time of year.

Ugh, I hate cleaning the toilet! Luckily I have heard about particles flying out when you flush, so we’ve been closing the lid before we flush for years!
