Goats and Pigs (And Chickens) Oh My!

This entry is part 9 of 18 in the series Chickens

They’re here!  They’re here!

I could NOT BE HAPPIER.  Happier than a pig in…..yeah, you get the idea.

Doink and Brandy arrived mid-day on Sunday.  Their wonderful owners, Denise and Bruce delivered our new family members with great care, and I’m sure on their part more than a bit of sadness.  They raised Doink and Brandy from babies and are only giving them up because they’re moving.  (Of course, they get full visitation rights.) Neighborhood kids were on hand to help out, which made the arrival that much more fun.

Brandy went right through the gate into her new home.  Doink needed a bit more convincing.

Mmmmmm......doughnuts! I'll go anywhere for a doughnut!

Come on Doink! Let's go THIS way!

The afternoon was filled with “settling in” chores.  They sleep together in a homemade dog house that came with them.  It’s big, so I had to take it apart to get in in the shed.

The mostly finished shed

Denise said Doink, like all pigs, likes to cool off in water.  Since we don’t have a place for him to wallow in yet (I’m sure he’ll make that all on his own) the kids rounded up a baby pool.  Doink took a few dips and seemed to enjoy himself.

Pool Party!

Love the water line from the pool - and that tail is constantly wagging!

Brandy is simply delightful.  She loves getting her head scratched and likes to pretend head-butt.  She doesn’t really make contact and it’s a very playful gesture.  She came with a sweet collar with a bell that has a perfect ring to it.  Looking forward to taking her on a walk around the neighborhood soon!

I'm Brandy - nice to meet you!

Aw, looks like she likes her new home...

The chickens are not too sure about these new things hanging around them, and I still have some coop adjustments to make.  One of the things I read was that chicken feed is not good for goats, and of course goats will eat anything.  So I put the chicken feed in the run instead of the coop.  Problem solved I thought – until Brandy squeezed through the chicken-only door (pop door is the proper name) with ease.  I added a piece of wood to reduced the size of the door by a third, and she squeezed through THAT.

This is not your space, Brandy. Go back through that little door, please!

Brandy is not the only Houdini – the chickens squeezed under the new gate and were out in the yard when I came home today.  They never really went into the part of the yard that they’ll be confined to from now on – they preferred to scratch at the base of all the bushes closer to the house (and made one hell of a mess doing it).  Since the new kids arrived, they’ve stayed in the run mostly, but finally started venturing out.

Slowly but surely, they started exploring.

Keela is, well…uncertain.

If I close my eyes, will they just go away?

Sunday evening our yard was full of friends and family coming to meet the new arrivals.  It was SO much fun.  My favorite question, the one that everyone seemed to ask, was “Why would you want a pig and a goat?”  I guess my only answer is “Why not?”

All in all, it was a very good day.

Hi , I’m Anne from Life on the Funny Farm (http://annesfunnyfarm.blogspot.com) visiting from the TALU.

Love your blog, love your new additions! I agree completely with your answer: “Why not?” My life is filled, perhaps, with a few too many ‘why nots’. Sigh.

Anyway, it’s nice to “meet” you. I hope you can pop over to my blog and say hi sometime if you get the chance.
