The Many Shades of White

This morning, in the home decorating website Houzz newsletter, was a great article on picking the right shade of white for your home decor. White is such a tricky color. Pick the wrong one and your room becomes too cold or too warm or too gray. I’ve been scanning decorator websites and magazines for awhile now and find after many years of colorful walls, I’m attracted to lightening up. Right now I’m in the process of redecorating the main level of my house (confession: I’ve hired an interior designer to keep me from making colors mistakes, BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT!)

I am using Dover White from Sherwin Williams for my ceilings and trim. In my living room I used good old Navajo White (Sherwin Williams) on three walls and it’s amazing how that long-loved decorator’s default color makes my one accent wall come alive. (I’ll have photos of the progress in another article.) Here are some other great web links that show the wide variety of whites and how to use them in your home:

My house in WA was painted in tones of white, from a Behr paint chip folder (Pure Natural Whites) that had a whole range of cool to warm whites. It was fun to plan with them. I painted much of my current house with Behr’s Whites & Neutrals, but I seem to be heading in the opposite direction color-wise, however, and have been adding deeper tones.

It’s amazing– I painted my bedroom the same color as the kitchen, but the colors don’t seem the same at all.

Joan painted one of the walls in her kitchen/dining area a dusky purple shade. The room faces south and west with great sunlight and the color is fabulous. I tried that same color (on a sample color board) thinking of it as a small accent wall in my family room. It looked horrible in there, doom and gloomy. Fascinating how much color changes from room to room and in various types of light.
