Fun Gifts for Grads

by Joan on April 20, 2010

Nancy gave you the practical gift list for grads last week.  I’m here to give you a few suggestions that will set you apart from the gift-giving crowd.

Fun AND practical!

Color-changing Umbrella – It’s an item we forgot when we sent our daughter off to college – but she needed an umbrella to walk around campus in downpours.  This is a totally cool umbrella that makes walking around in the rain fun.

Finance bookI Will Teach You to Be Rich by Ramit Sethi is a WONDERFUL book for young adults who think nothing of dropping $4 for a latté every day and then calling mom or dad because they’ve run out of money and don’t know why.  They will read it because his style of writing is engaging, his information is accessible, and it has the word “rich” in the title.

Clothes iron – Yeah, you’re wondering why this is on the list, aren’t you?  Just because most dorm rooms don’t allow a hot plate or cooking device other than a microwave doesn’t mean you can’t give a gift that bends the rules just a little.  Your basic clothes iron can do double duty and make an excellent grilled cheese sandwich. Who doesn’t want a grilled cheese sandwich every now and then?  An iron (I love this cool green one), a small roll of heavy duty aluminum foil and basic instructions (this website is cute and informative) will make a gift that will put a smile on the graduate’s face.

Can't go wrong with Seuss!

Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss – The quintessential graduation book. Add a heartfelt note for a gift your graduate can keep forever.

Flip Camcorder – The new grad is going to want to document his/her first year out in the world, and a Flip camcorder is a great way to do it.  Kids can easily send short movies home to mom and dad to update them on their activities (ha!)  They’re amazingly affordable, from $110 on up.

Their own domain name – You’ll show you are the most tech-savvy friend they have if you give the graduate their own domain name as a gift.  (I’m going to assume you ARE a tech-savvy friend and know how to do this yourself…but if you don’t know and want a long-winded explanation, this USA Today article gives you some basic information.

Books about college life – Guide books can help students navigate those first weeks away from home.  I’ve heard great things about The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College and How to Survive Your Freshman Year.

Personalized M&Ms – It’s fun and they’ll love it! You can even get a picture printed on them – or their college logo.

And for girls only:

Pajama Jeans – She will want to be comfy when she is studying!  And what is better than a combination of jeans and pjs?

Victoria’s Secret “PINK” Campus-Branded Loungewear (some available online, some only in the local stores) – For the girls that want to rock their college logo, here’s cute loungewear that will make them the hit of their dorm!

Congratulations, graduates!

Most of these ideas are pretty amazing, but as a current college student, not gonna lie, the pajama jeans are right up there with Snuggies. They sound fun but are ultimately mock-worthy and will live in the bottom of a drawer.
